Since 1997 RC Irkutsk has been patronizing the Irkutsk Regional Nursing Home/Orphanage #2 for retarded and disabled children. Rotarians keep monthly and special events visits to the facility, such as Christmas celebration, Art and Handicraft exhibits, Children’s Day, the beginning of school year-1 st of September. They also bring there visiting Rotarians from North America, Germany , France , Australia , etc. Irkutsk Rotarians have been giving the facility toys, puzzles, coloring books, balloons, colored chalk and other things. Also, several puppet shows run by Humanitarian Center were arranged for the kids. Their singing group of 8 girls takes part in the club’s celebrations, Rotary Centennial party, District Conference, PETS, etc.
There are 256 boarders in the Orphanage age from 4 to 18, many of them are severely retarded and/or disabled. The staff of teachers, trainers, medical personnel, teachers’ and trainers’ aids, cleaning ward are loving and dedicated to the children. The Orphanage’s goal is to educate to the highest level those capable of schooling, train all children with skills which may lead to employment, and to prepare all children and teenagers to adjust to real life after they leave Orphanage at the age of 18.

Food and lodging, building maintenance, medical care, teaching and learning equipment and materials, also the staffs’ salary are subsidized by the government. The Orphanage is housed in a 30 year old city owned building which is in constant need of repair. Thus, the funds made available for the Orphanage are limited to providing staff’s salary, basic housing, medical needs and building repairs. There is no additional money in the Orphanage’s budget to provide extra.

In the year of 2000 RC Irkutsk got ? Matching Grant for Orphanage/Boarding School #2. The money was used for 3 dry swimming pools, Montessori set and dentist office with the equipment. In 2005 the club received another MG which was used to equip the workshop and sewing shop.

Irkutsk Rotary club has a committee which monitors all provisions to the club projects for the Orphanage. The committee members are: Gennady Ivanov, Ludmila Ivanova and Natalia Goncharova. Director Vasily Belousov and Deputy Director Nadezhda Kuchumova are very cooperative and helpful. Many club members have developed strong relationship with the administration and the staff.

All the boarders have medical and physical problems. There are dozens of Montessori sets consisting of many special items: for visual differentiation, coordination development, concentration of attention, and many other. The sets purchased for MG funds in 2000 are worn out! They need to be replaced as they have been constantly used by kids of all ages and of different levels of mental ability. An experienced instructor makes Montessori training a significant part of rehabilitation course.
