The Serzhantovo Children House is situated in a far-away northern district of the Primorsky region (town of Dalnegorsk) 350 Miles from Vladivostok. It is the constituent part of a school complex. There are 59 children in the House between the ages of 3 and 18, including 14 children of pre-school age. There have been no renovations completed on the bathroom in 23 years. The area is entirely too small. Pipes leak water and the fixtures are badly worn. The sinks for washing are actually located outside the bathroom in the corridor. Unlike the bathroom for the smaller children, that had a pan for washing feet, the older children’s bathroom doesn’t contain any type of shower or area to clean the entire body. Additionally, there is no ventilation and an unpleasant odor is always lingering.

There is additional storage space immediately adjacent to the bathroom that will be utilized for expansion and will actually increase the overall footprint of the funtional area. And, the boys and girls will now have separated latrine areas for privacy.

The project entails considerable labor costs due to the current conditions of the bathroom. The toilets are literally cemented into the floor and major demolition will be required in order to remove the old fixtures, tile and electrical wiring, and install the new ones. The staff at the orphanage always tries to do their own work whenever possible but this project is beyond even their abilities.
